PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Antisocial Personality Disorder, Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase, Dsm-5
Document Summary
What is considered normal or abnormal behaviour can vary between people, cultures, and time periods, making it difficult to define what makes behaviour abnormal. Many clinicians use a fixed set of criteria to broadly define abnormality, summarized as the "four d"s": (exhibiting one or more of these characteristics does not necessarily label someone as having a psychological disorder. ) Refers to having thoughts, emotions and behaviours that fall far outside of the standards of what others are doing. However, it would not make sense to label the cultural practices of minority populations as psychological disorders. Deviance refers to those who fall below and well above the standard of the group. (if we are to label people with low iqs as disordered we should do the same for people with very high iqs) If a person experiences intense negative feelings due to their behaviour, such as anxiety, sadness, or despair, this may be indicative of a psychological disorder.
