PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Wilder Penfield, Facepalm, Lesion
Document Summary
Lesion studies: accidentally human brain injuries a major basis for neuroscience research. A direct measure of a brain structure"s funcion. Hard to selecively target paricular regions and draw conclusions. Simulaion and single cell recording: electrically simulate an area of the brain with a microelectrode and observe results on behavior in order to build an anatomical ma related to funcion, wilder penield. Used electrode to map out regions of paients sufering from seizures, use probe to idenify and remove scar issue: electrode can also be used to measure electrical acivity in brain. Placing near a neuron and measuring acivity while paient performs a task or simulus is presented. Structural neuroimaging: ct scan (series of x-rays of slices of brain, pieced together), helpful in diagnosing brain injuries. Limitaion is that it"s relaively low resoluion: mri (magneic resonance imaging) which aligns the hydrogen atoms in the brain, to create a very precise image.
