Document Summary

Sophisicaion and communicaive efeciveness of speech = only humans. Cerebral region for processing voice in human has a counterpart in rhesus macaques. Fmri; found a voice area in the auditory cortex of macaques in the anterior temporal lobe. Greater acivity for macaque vocalizaion than other sound categories. Neuronal adaptaion in response to diferent calls from the same individual. Meaning, the brain region can process informaion about the idenity of the speaker. Which is also observed in the human voice area. Means that the area is not unique to human. Means that it has a long evoluionary history. When ancestors began to talk, they were already equipped for it. Studies oten focus too much on speech percepion. This study suggests a new strategy of looking at what is common with other animals. Human substrate for speech is its lateralizaion to the let hemisphere. But led to a bias where any letward asymmetry more likely to be published.
