PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sensation Seeking, Human Genome Project, Abo Blood Group System
Document Summary
Genes and the environment interact to shape who you become. Zygote the new cell formed when a sperm penetrates an ovum. Zygotes contain 46 chromosomes 23 from each parent. Chromosome a threadlike structure that is made from deoxyribonucleic acid (dna) Genes are comprised of segments of dna that provide the chemical code for development. According to the human genome project, chromosomes contain between ~30,000-40,000 genes. The zygote quickly divides at an exponential rate. It grows from 2 to 4 cells, then to 16 cells and so on. By birth, you have billions of diferent cells all with the same. Each parent can produce 8 million+ diferent genetic combinations from the sperm/ova. Any couple could produce 64 trillion genetically distinct ofspring. The male determines the sex of the ofspring. 22 out of our 23 pairs of chromosomes are autosomes. Autosomes chromosomes that are similar in both males & females. The 23rd pair of chromosomes determine the person"s gender.
