PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Neural Tube, Myelin, Neural Plate
Document Summary
Brain: made up of 100 billion neurons; each neuron has 1-10000 connections with other neurons. The brain makes who you are personality, perceptions, memories etc. Descartes separated the mental processes of the mind from the physical processes (dualist) mind was separate entity existing outside of biology but in ctrl of actions. Neurons are specialized for communication via synaptic transmission. 2 zones: receptive: receive signals from other neurons begins w/ soma & dendrites branch, transmission: pass on signals to other cells terminal end. Soma: contains organelles that keep the cell fxning. Dendrites: branch from soma to reach to other neurons and receive signals to be relayed through the dendritic branch to the cell body and down axon. Terminal ends: cluster of branches from axon reach out to make connections with receptive zone of nearby neurons to transmit signal further. Each neuron can receive thousands of inputs from other neurons. Glial cells: provide structural support, nourishment and insulation for neurons.
