Document Summary

Auditory sys translate sound waves from vibrating obj into psychological experience. Sound waves don"t make asound unless an auditory sys is present to translate those sound waves into perceptual experience of audition. Range of frequencies heard varies btw species (ex. dog whistle we can"t hear it) Dogs, wales, dophins wider hearing range; birds narrower. Fish detect low range; bats and rats high range. Basilar membrane: contains hearing receptors; sounds of diff frequencies are processed along diff areas of the basilar membrane. Varies in length across speacies (shortest in amphibians/reptiles. Longer basilar membrane = processes wider range of frequencies. Mammals can discriminate the widest range of frequencies. Sound waves are initiated by a vibrating obj or by forcing air past a small cavity. Air molec surrounding the source of the sound to move chain rxn of moving air particles. Sound waves travel in all directions away from the source alternating bands of more and less compressed air molecules.
