PSYCH 1XX3 Lecture 12: Hunger-and-the-Chemical-Senses module 12
Document Summary
Food/calorie use to be scarce behaviours motivated by need to obtain energy for survival. Feeding behaviours are guided by hunger, satiety signals, taste & smell. Low blood glu feels hungry; glu is preferred source of energy for the brain (can"t use fat) body is very sensitive to lvl of glu. Glycogen: storage form of glu; maintains energy lvl btw meals; stored in muscles, but mainly in liver (can be readily converted to glu) Pancreas secretes insulin to promote the uptake of glu by cells in the body and stimulate storage of excess glu as glycogen. Low lvls of glu, liver breaks down glycogen and release back as glu in circulation. When glu and glycogen lvl get too low feel hungry. Liver and pancreas buffer extreme swings in blood glu lvls. Npy: appetite stimulant; high lvl of npy in hypothalamus is associated with feelings of hunger increase food seeking behaviours, even see in fish, reptiles, birds and non human mammals.
