Founded discipline of cognitive development: explanation, not just description. Convinced us that kids are curious, active explorers: play important role in own development. Generally accurate re. how kids of different ages think. Failure to distinguish competence from cognitive performance: e. g. object permanence, e. g. pendulum task. Although tasks are v reliable across time, they may not actually measure what piaget thought it was measuring. Sometimes vague as to mechanism: what maturational changes and experiences are necessary to move through the stages. Information processing in older children: working memory capacity and efficiency, development of strategy use, role of knowledge. Rehearsal leads to information going into short term and working memory. If we rehearse them enough, information will be sent to be stored permanently by getting transferred to long term memory: we can also use techniques for processing new information like using pneumonic, grouping, etc. , We need to pull these strategies from long term memory.
