Overview: effect of media on development is very controversial and political. Industries and companies in media create campaigns against their effects on child developments. Ethics does not allow thorough active laboratory studies. Tv"s positive effects: provides children with vital education and improved development, ex. Sesame street was created particularly to prepare impoverished children for school. Found that he could develop effective programs to help impoverished kids, but hoped to widen his reach. About 50% of american kids watched it: results, impoverished children who watched the show daily had larger vocabularies and were better prepared for schools than children who did not watch it as often. Tv"s negative effect: tv is pretty aggressive, no. of acts of violence per hour 5 on primetime show. Longitudinal effects are less concrete due to lack of causal statements and random assignments.
