Document Summary
Bowlby and ainsowrth: big researchers in this field: the propensity to make strong emotional bonds to certain individuals is a basic component of human nature. We pick one person early on to love more than all the others. Usually mom (spends more time with baby: sometimes it"s dad or another alternate caregiver. Freud was the first psychologist to theorize about attachment. Little babies are attached to their mothers in the sense of loving them and wanting them nearby. Comes from mom"s ability to satisfy babies id impulses to suck. The attachment goes optimally if there is sensitive interactions between mom and baby during these interactions (suckling) Cuddling, closeness involved in breastfeeding: very important to attachment. If it isn"t there we could have problem with attachments. Baby monkeys raise in cages with 2 surrogate moms: one was soft and plush with no food, the other was hard but it had a bottle of food with it.
