Behavioural genetics (biological vs environmental contributions to development) Genes and environment work together and affect one another, both equally important. Babies born w a certain temperament, but can make the baby less difficult depending on their environmental conditions. Genotype set of genes you have at birth inherited from parents, stays the same ,codes for you to be a certain way. Phenotypes observable, measurable expression of our genes as we interact w environment. Gene can code for 6 feet, environment/nutrition is not optimal so you only grow to 5"8 (phenotype) eg. (caspi 2003) psychiatric disorders. Genotype that caused them to have high serotonin or low serotonin (serotonin transporter genes), ssri"s. Knew their serotonin levels, watched them for 20 years, longitudinal. Their genotype serotonin levels actually didn"t matter if they had few stressful events. Predicted depression when people had many stressful live events.
