Somatic symptom disorders: somatic symptom disorder, conversion disorder (functional neurological symptom. Disorder: psychological factors affecting other medical conditions, factitious disorder, illness anxiety disorder, other speci c somatic symptom and related disorder, unspeci ed somatic symptom and related disorder. Conversion disorder: one or more symptoms of altered voluntary motor or sensory function. Conversion disorder etiology: modern psychoanalysis, defence against anxiety re con ict (primary gain, energy from con ict > symbolic somatic loss, symptoms serve several functions. Gratify dependency needs; stick role: no clear behavioural model, focus on secondary gain: Reinforcement for somatic complaints (attention, nurturance, love) Communication model 1: initial innate physical expression of emotion triggers response by mom, child learns verbal label to communication needs, some do not learn well, continue to use somatic expression of emotion. Communication model 2: symptom distracts from internal distress, symptoms signal distress to others, symptoms based on conception of illness, explains changed symptoms with education.
