First described in 1902 by dr. george still, english physician. 1970s: attention deficit disorder (add); +h or -h for presence of hyperactivity. 1980s: add plus attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) for those w/ hyperactivity. Dsm-iv (1994) and dsm-5 use adhd for all cases; three subtypes: Genetic diathesis in common btwn adhd, autism, and schizophrenia. Fails to give close attn. to details or makes careless mistakes. Has difficulty sustaining attn. in work or play. Doesn"t seem to listen when spoken to directly. Doesn"t follow thru on instructions; fails to finish work. Dislikes or avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort. Very closely related to the school system; behaviours observable by the school system. Teachers not wanting to deal w/ disruptive children and diagnosticians facing pressure to diagnose them. Fidgets w/ or taps hands or feet and squirms in seat. Leaves seat in situations in which remaining seated in expected. Runs about or climbs in situations where it"s inappropriate.
