1880s - freud; identified anxiety as a singular cause of multiple disorders; neuroses. Anxiety is something that everyone can identify w/ Birth control pills are the most prescribed drugs and anti-anxiety pills are the second most. Anxiety disorder due to a another medical condition. Anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed in the dsm. Excessive anxiety more days that not for 6mos or more, about several events or activities (e. g. work, school performance) --> is anxiety so severe that there"s distress or dysfunction. Person finds it difficult to control the worry. Accompanied by at least 3 of the following 6 symptoms more days that not for the last 6mos (only 1 for kids): Clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning e. g. os s of functioning. Much more alert to what"s going on around them. Usually starts in 20s or 30s, w/ high proportion in childhood or adolescence.
