Document Summary

Flooding: originally called implosive therapy, based on the notion of extinction works by trying to eliminate a conditioned fear response by presenting the feared stimulus over and over again without ever having it followed by an aversive event. Problem with flooding: elicits a lot of anxiety in the individuals. Systematic desensitization therapy: based on a diff part of our understanding of learning, works on a diff learning principle than flooding: counter conditioning. Replaces an aversive fear response with something that is not aversive , something that is opposite to fear (relaxation: starts with teaching individuals how to relax. 2nd stage of therapy: have the individual actually do the things on the list while relaxing. Individual is able to relax bc they"ve already imagined themselves do it: very effective, used in things ike fear of flying, fear of heights, etc, takes longer than flooding but doesn"t elicit much anxiety. Preferred approach to treating phobias bc it doesn"t elicit much anxiety.
