In the dsm 3 and dsm4 2 main categories were somatization disorder and hypochondriasis: these categories don"t exist in dsm5, dsm 5 does have illness anxiety disorder. The individual may initially believe that they have a defect in their heart, and then later think it"s something wrong with their lungs. Sometimes, the concern stays the same, in other cases, they change their concerns: this category is missing dysfunction*** There is no criteria that says this disorder must cause dysfunction in an area of life individual can function perfectly fine and still meet the criteria for this disorder. This is bc their high level of concern for their health is essentially distress (look at the third criterion: similar to somatic symptom disorder, illness anxiety disorder is poorly understood. There are no clear theories about how it arises. Often, the symptoms actually do disappear on their own.
