Failure to initiate or respond to social interactions. Deficient use and understanding of gestures (don"t read gestures, and cant use them) Lack of facial expression and nonverbal communication. Lining up toys in the same way over and over again. Echolalia --> repeating what other people say. Idiosyncratic phrases --> they make up words, or there are words/phrases they like to repeat but only have meaning to them. Insistence on sameness of routines or rituals. Fixated interests of unusual intensity or focus. Adverse response to specific sounds, textures, etc. Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning . Symptoms not better explained by intellectual disability, or global developmental delay. Prone to anxiety, depression (adolescents or adults) 10-14 yrs --> 1 in 63 (108% increase) 5-9 yrs --> 1 in 75 (204% increase) 2-4 yrs --> 1 in 144 (170% increase) By sex: males 1 in 48 (142% increase), girls 1 in 208 (161% increase)
