Personality vs other field: more global and general, long history of interest. Many large-scale theories: theories don"t guide research, theories generated/tested differently. Theory development & testing: theorists clinicians, not scientists, in uenced by theorist"s personality. Why these theories: historic role in personality theory development, currently important, have been in uential in the past, nicely illustrate a particular perspective, they are interesting in and of themselves. What is personality: whatever makes for consistency in our behaviour, whatever is responsible for individual differences in behaviour. Type approach: limited number of distinct personality types, emphasis on biological bases of personality, oldest approach (2000 yrs old) four humours, blood, phlegm, black vile, yellow vile. Sickness is cause of an excess of the four humours. The four humours: hippocrates: born with an excess of one of the four humours that gives their personality a type, sanguine: optimistic, low-key, choleric: aroused, aggressive, melan choler (melancholy): sadness and prone to depression.
