PSYCH 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nomothetic, Human Nature, Humorism
Document Summary
Group vs. individual: nomothetic: to study individuals to generalize the findings to all people; rule making". Idiographic: to study individuals to understand the person specifically (i. e. how can we improve this person"s life) Little empirical support: postdictive (explaining things once they already happen), not predictive, vague, abstract concepts (difficult to measure/quantify) Historic role in personality theory development; influential in the past. Whatever makes for consistency in our behaviour (intrapersonal consistency) Whatever is responsible for individual differences in behaviour (interpersonal differences) Make observations imagine various hypothetical constructs to explain them develop a theory to relate them. Limited number of distinct personality types & little movement b/w types through life: type approach. The body is made up of 4 elements called humours". The reason we get sick is because the humours are out of balance. Treat sickness by figuring out which humour is in excess and eliminating it. Personality = internal characteristics and tendencies that dominate behaviour/thinking/emotions.
