PSYCH 2B03 Lecture 6: PSYCH 2B03 Lecture : Eysencks PEN Theory
Document Summary
Eysenck describes personality in a hierarchy of constructs. Acts are organized into habits -> organized into traits-> organized into/conditioned by factors. As we move from acts to factors, we are also moving from the most experiential to the most genetically determined aspects of personality. Throughout history, we see many patterns of personality. Eysenck wanted to account for these consistencies; wanted to encompass the classical descriptions of personality. Extroverted: active, assertive, outgoing, sensation-seeking, adventurous, etc. He believed these two dimensions were independent/orthogonal of each other. To be introverted was no better or worse than being extroverted; psychologically: neuroticism/emotional stability: People high in neuroticism are anxious, needy, emotional, prone to instability. Emotional stability: having few highs and lows, very neutral. Neuroticism is linked with a lot of disorders, psych disorders. It is not necessarily a good thing to be extremely emotionally stable; no showing emotion. Originally, he just had these 2 dimensions for many years.
