Started on the trunk of his body and has worked its way outwards. Basic obs: temperature is 38. 3 c, rr: 20, hr: 100, bp 110/80 and o2 sats ra 98% General observation: will is well hydrated but itchy and miserable. He has widespread rash all over his body. Crops of papules, vesicles and pustules with surrounding erythema. The marked scratching that has taken place makes the exact nature of the lesions more difficult to determine. Other examinations: chest is clear and all other examinations are normal. Swabs of vesicular fluid and can be sent off for microscopy, culture and pcr. Symptomatic treatment of fever and itching in a healthy child. Newborn babies if the mother develops varicella or herpes zoster in the 7 days before or after birth. Should be given in severe chickenpox or for clinical infection in an immunocompromised child or newborn infant. Antibiotics are also given concurrently to cover secondary skin infection.
