Hedonism --everything we do is to maxmimize pleasure. He theorized that we want to return to a state of no desire which occurs at death. There is a psychic energy (libido) powers our sexual and aggressive actions. The built in store of energy that powers all of our behavior and instincts. Argues that there are no other needs or instincts. Everything we do can be traced back to this. Sex and aggression is everywhere, the worst crimes combine both things Ie rape: we want to gratify both these instincts with the same behavior. Translates needs to drives: we need vitamins, oxygen etc . The id translates need into a felt psychological drive. No direct physical contact with the outside world. Can access stored images of what is seen and heard. That"s why kids will do weird things without understanding the consequences. Does not know that there was a past and will be a future.
