PSYCH 2B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Dreamwork, Freudian Slip, Association Football
Document Summary
Each dream image is an attempt to express unexpressable id impulses. In a way that does not cause as much anxiety than giving in to the impulse. Dreams work because in sleep the ego is weakened, cannot completely retain the repressive blocks. Wrestling match between remainder of the unconscious ego and the id. Id wants the full expression of the impulse, ego wants no expression. Eg. desire for boy to possess mother: cannot be expressed in real world. Try and symbolize this thought: image that represents/is associated with mother without alerting the sleeping ego to the real meaning of the symbol. Find the symbol in the day residue: last 24 hours of things we"ve experienced, buried still in unconscious memory. Find something that reminds you of mom eg. riding a bicycle. Displacement (displaced desire away from mother image to bike image)
