Warning for lectures: social psychology is not just common sense, don"t just assume you do not need to write it down. Course goals: understanding of the content of social psychology, understand how research in social psychology happens, understand the impact of research on social psychology theories, able to apply social psychology theories and the research to novel ( real-world ) situations. The scientific method: theory-data cycle: observation + theory hypothesis + predictions test, if fails to confirm modify hypothesis, if confirms, adds to theory and observations. Do scientists prove stuff: in science, fact" can only mean confirmed to such a degree that it would be perverse to withhold provisional assent. " (stephen jay gould) Can we say that x caused y: generalizability (aka external validity ) can the findings be applied to others, or are they relevant only to the group being studied.
