Social facilitation: happens when people are working alone or in the presence of an audience: performed enhanced on simple, well learned tasks and diminished in novel, complex tasks. Social loa ng: happens when people are working with others towards the same goal: the more people in the group, the less each individual contributes. But sometimes we do worse in groups than alone; social psychology drops social facilitation theory. As arousal increases, performance increases to optimal level, at which point increasing arousal decreases performance. Beyond optimal arousal = anxiety and interference with cognitive processes (optimal peak in middle of parabola) Applies to most tasks we do in our lives. For complex tasks, the optimal arousal level is much lower. For well-learned, simple tasks, the optimal arousal level is much greater/ later. Zajonc"s generalized drive: universal and also seen in other animals. Evaluation apprehension hypothesis: interference in performance when there is an audience present, start to think they are evaluating you.
