Document Summary

Social psychology explanations: proximate explanations, what is going on right now and how is that affecting what we are doing. If the costs of helping outweigh the benefits, then we do not help. It is not about you at all: this is very nice but not may people believe it. If there is an easier way to feel good, we will not help because helping is hard. If listening to music makes us feel better too, we will do that instead. In control condition where they do not feel guilty, not many people help it is like the baseline condition: when they feel guilty they are far more likely to help. In comedy or easier help, we see most people opting for 0: there was significantly less help given when the negative state could be relieved. Who wins the debate: chaldini came up with an idea. If you feel empathy, that is a negative state.
