Group processes prejudice arises from competition (real or imagined) between groups poor intergroup relations result from perceived or actual threats, loss of material goods or self esteem 1. Competition for material goods puts us into a state of negative interdependence, can be rectified by putting people into a state of positive interdepnedence. Lord of the flies material good represented power, when given to one person power struggle begins, two groups form and hate each other access to all of them. Different types of material goods we need to survive, power gives. Competition over material goods leads to: stereotyping, hostility towards the out group, harassment of the out group, enhanced loyalty to in group (love prejudice) This can be reversed by making the groups work together: superordinate goals can"t accomplish on their own, have to work together, won"t stay in state once goal achieved ehp.
