Method: 120 male undergraduates waiting either alone, with a friend, or with a stranger, overheard a woman fall and cry out in pai. Two-person groups were less likely to offer help to the injured woman than were subjects who overheard the emergency while alon. Iv: witness makeup: participant alone, participant + stranger, participant + unemotional confederate, participant + friend. Dv = % of trials in which judy is offered help within two minutes. How do we know this tested pluralistic ignorance and not diffusion of responsibility: ambiguity of the event, ability to communicate, witness make up diffusion of responsibility: latane and darley"s epilepsy" experiment: Method: the authors conducted an experiment to show that the more observant (bystanders) present in an emergency situation, the less likely it became that anyone would help: in the experiment, all participants overheard an epileptic seizu.
