Interested in how people who lived through such misery, could still be happy: orphans, holocaust survivors, ww2 etc. Interested in how people who have been through so much could be happy: positive psychology emerges as a new subdivision and dedicated itself to trying to understand the opposite side, that which is positive is good. At root: that which is good for you is positive, that which is bad for you is negative. Emotions like optimism can be learned, irrespective of life conditions: happiness is the result of cognitive outlook. It is possible to be positive by learning to have a positive outlook. Inverts freudian theory: freud: you think something because you feel it, positive psych: you feel something because you think it. Wellbeing is: positive emotion, accomplishment, relationships, meaningful life.
