Have a good idea of what features make up words and letters. Hierarchical structures, but at the same time, a limited set of line segments make up letters (verticals, horizontals, corners, simples, etc. ), and a limited set of letters make up words. Word recognition is an excellent stimulus space to study how people put features together to recognize larger units, and to build computer simulations. People are usually too good at reading. We have to make it harder so that we can measure effects. Reduce stimulus presentation time (e. g. 20 milliseconds to display) and mask it with an unrelated string of letters. Tachistoscopic: presents stimuli for a precisely controlled amount of time: very old now they use computers. People are faster to recognize happy than they are harpy . It isn"t just that people don"t know the word harpy . The more frequent the word, the faster it is to recognize (as measured by recognition threshold time)
