PSYCH 2H03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Necker Cube, Retina, Receptive Field
Document Summary
Lecture 5 introduction to the visual system. We see the world in terms of meaningful objects. The visual stimulus that our brain receives does not consist of objects. Stimulus project on retina: gives 2d representation of different colours and intensities of light. Therefore a lot of processing needs to be done and assumptions need to be made by our perceptual system. Our perception goes beyond the information given. Cube is ambiguous with respect ot how it can be interpreted. Could perceive it as if u are looking down on the box vs. if you are looking up on the box: we can flip our interpretation between the two by focusing on different aspects of the box. An example of how perception can go beyond the information given (brain can interpret the stimulus itself in differnet ways ) the visual system: Light passes through the eye, lands on the retina in the eye.
