Most common in the lumbar (lower back) or cranial (nerve) regions of the spine. Risk factors include results in a lot of pain: weight (pressure, occupation, genetics. A common occurrence in all ages: happens in men women and children. Medications: over the counter pain meds, narcotics, ex: oxytocin, anticonvulsants. Surgeons can remove just the protruding portion of the disk. Rarely, however, the entire disk must be removed: in these cases, the vertebrae may need to be fused together with metal hardware to provide spinal stability, rarely, surgeon may suggest the implantation of an artificial disk. For half a century, the human brain was believed to contain: about 100 billion neurons, one trillion glial cells, glia:neuron ratio of 10:1.
