PSYCH 3AG3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Visual Search, Tinnitus, Proprioception
Document Summary
It"s all downhill from here: cognition& late adulthood. Attention the mechanisms or processes through which sensory information is selected under further processing. Taste: number of taste buds decrease, 40-50 years women, 50-60 years men, taste buds that remain atrophy, sensitivity may begin decrease ~60, salty & sweet first, bitter & sour later. Loss of nerve endings in nose: esp >70, may have more to do with lifestyle and exposures. Touch, vibration, pain and proprioception: many experience, but unclear whether normal aging produces changes, disease or medication, decreased blood flow, dietary deficiencies (eg. Increased sensitivity to touch (>70) as skin thins: maybe prone to bruising. Perception: meaning attributed to sensory stimuli, assumes sensory information got through the bottleneck, often subject to top-down modulator, filtered. Inhibition=top down modulation: prefrontal cortex-rapid neuronal loss, source in focusing one and not the other, fitness will change the rate.
