Empirical approach: this is using questionnaires, unlike dsm, it does not give you very specific categories, but it gives basic ideas. It is excessive distress when separated from an individual: 8 different symptoms form dsm, persistent fear and distress from being left. it is usually a primary caregiver. It is 1-2% and this goes up to 3-4% in older kids. It is about 2-14%, there is concern about over diagnoses, since it co occurs with other anxiety disorders. Ptsd: requires exposure to a serious traumatic event, where there is an intense fearful reaction, we ese this in kids who are abused or maltreated.
