Fp: application of psychology to real-world issues (i. e. the law), rather than the scientific study of phenomena that might have direct practical applications. Only recently has fp been recognized as a sub-field of psychology (~15 years) First exposure of fp probably came from media: for most, through movies. Generally means application of knowledge in some field to issues, re: legal system. Fewer than 20% of criminal cases involve fe. Only about 50% of the fe collected is analyzed. 1842: murders in the rue morgue by edgar allen poe, featuring auguste dupin: first fictional detective story, and very first description and use of fp. 1887: a study in scarlet by arthur conan doyle, as the first sherlock holmes story the most famous fictional detective in all of history. 1888: dr. thomas bond provides the first offender profile in a non-fiction setting: london"s whitechapel murders case.
