PSYCH 3CD3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Illusory Correlation, Hattie Mcdaniel, 8 Seconds
Document Summary
Fill it with information - a. k. a mostly stereotype information. Comes from parents (trust the info they give us - who got it from their parents), through media (presents us with info on all sorts of different people) Children tend to not understand what we teach them when they are very young, but as they age may eventually come to understand and agree with it. There is some chance of rejecting these but its difficult. Direct training: this group is bad, they"re mean, they"re aggressive etc. Indirect training: jokes parents tell at home, grabbing your hand when you"re near certain types of people, not letting you watch certain type of tv, labels for different groups, etc. can give hints of which groups are bad. Internalization - ex. a child hears a joke and repeats it over and over. They may not grow up to believe in the message of the jokes but they might also internalize it.
