PSYCH 3CD3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Cognitive Load, Spreading Activation, Neutral Nation
Document Summary
What scenarios are you more likely to use your stereotype that are implicitly activated in your spreading activation. Categorization and stereotypes are automatically activated and once activated they are ready for use. Does being in certain mood states make me more or less likely to use stereotypes when. Whole point of stereotypes is to save cognitive load, so if different moods make us unable to wholly process or think about something we will likely end up using heuristics. Various different mood states have an effect on our ability to think deeply and centered. Increased arousal is associated decreased central processing, thus we would be more likely to use heuristics when aroused above a certain level. Motivation within context limits what you want to or will focus on centrally. Mood affects our ability to notice outgroup heterogeneity (makes it easier to apply the homogenizing factor of stereotyping to groups)
