Document Summary

Relation between shyness and online self-disclosure with and without a live webcam in young adults. Subjects screened in high and low shyness, some brought to the front of lab, others brought to back. None of them knew each other and did not see each other coming into the lab. Told they were going to engage in social communication task over computer. Unlike face to face interaction which can be dominated by social individuals, in this case the computer would not allow them to talk over one another like in person. Some people could see the other person while communicating, some could not. Only instructions was that they shouldn"t insult one another over yahoo messenger. In the shy group with webcam, they did not disclose as much about themselves as without the webcam present. The non-shy group shared slightly more with the webcam present than without. Shy adults look no different than their sociable counterparts when the webcam is off.
