Tell the kids you are going to get toys from the other room. A few minutes later, a stranger comes in and says something to the child every 10 seconds and continuously moves closer. One child took the sunglasses off the stranger which is a non-normative response for a child. Avoidance as a static variable, rather than a temporal and dynamic course. By looking at growth curves of avoidance during the stranger approach task within one visit, we can examine different patterns of avoidance. The present study: characterize the temporal course of avoidance during an episode of social threat using a group-based approach. Independent variable: latent classes of observed behavioural avoidance during the stranger approach task. Observed avoidance = gaze aversion, orientation away from stranger, bodily fear (freezing or fidgeting behaviours). Age, sex, baseline cortisol, time of 1st sample collected (cortisol) Cortisol reactivity (sample collected 15 mins after stranger approach task baseline sample)
