When parents fail: peer rejection of abused children. Children who are physically abused are likely to be rejected because they are aggressive. Abused children are also often unable to regulate their emotions, and this too leads to peer rejection. X-axis: not abused, up to 5 years of abuse, 5 + years of abuse. Y-axis: percentage of children who are a) never rejected b) rejected during 1 year and c) rejected during 2 or more years. If abuse is long-term you also see long-term rejection. Can improve a child"s sense of social self-efficacy. Important to facilitate a learning vs. performance goal. Can teach child how to cooperate, be responsive communicator, support or validate other children"s ideas and actions, and play games and sports. Unpopular children benefit from interacting with younger children. Interaction with children of both genders can be helpful. Can introduce boys and girls to a broader range of behavioural styles and activities.
