PSYCH 3T03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Cichlid, Begging In Animals
Document Summary
Cuckoos use other birds to raise their young. They leave their chicks in the nests of other birds to raise. Frequently used hosts have adaptaions against the parasiism. Hosts who are new are not able to discriminate. Cuckoos stay in the nest for a long ime ater they"ve hatched. Cuckoo will grow to very large sizes, to the point where they are larger than the parent birds. Most hosts will detect cuckoo eggs easily, and will have a series of adaptaions against them. Dunnocks and other new hosts are not able to discriminate. Cuckoo races seem to have paricular hosts that they specialize on, and will produce mimeic eggs. In a populaion that is not parasiized by cuckoos, they will lay their eggs in a more open area. In areas parasiized by cuckoos, birds will lay their eggs in more secreive places.
