Some species may care facultaively on the condiion of if they are related. Young are fed ater they leave the nest. Parents constantly bombarded by ofspring in nests and cr ches that might not be their own. Barn swallows don"t have cr ches, no selecion pressure to recognize their own young. Parents may recognize chicks by voice, some facial markings. Using indexes, they could conclude that clif swallow chicks had a lot more variaion/informaion, more variable than barn swallow calls. Figure out their own lamb"s scent, and reject all other lambs. During birth process, oxytocin reprograms the ewe"s brain. Before birth in mitral cell layer of olfactory bulb, neurons respond to food odours. At birth, the cells abruptly proliferate and switch to responding to lamb odours.
