Singled out and seen as unequal, treated poorly by brother. His gender expression goes against the norm gender identity associated with his sex: he attributes more to women, and women are seen as less than men. His mother dies giving birth to him, he holds onto the doll and makes a connection with this because the doll can never leave him demonstrating the anxiety around being abandoned. Societal expectations first assumption is that he has a sex doll for its manufactured purpose which isn"t the case which they find out later on that it"s a coping mechanism (cid:498)other,(cid:499) lars is the other. Different from society, doesn"t fit within the relationships, his actions don"t correlate with norms of collective group: unappreciative of the efforts of the community, doesn"t recognize, community at first seems him as odd but adopts him over time. The other within sameness: separation of monster from person.
