RELIGST 1B03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Continental Philosophy, Religious Education, Bhikkhu
Document Summary
Instruction in religion is often provided by an adherent of or specialist in that religion ie. a muslim sheikh, jewish rabbi, hindu guru, or buddhist bhikkhu. Religious education always orients itself against other traditions as they rarely convey the teachings of other traditions within an impartial framework- this would undermine the intrinsic conviction of the religious institution. However such teachings might also serve to manifest the shared or similar values in other traditions or nurture tolerance of the beliefs and practices of others. The world views in some religions include a belief in angels, devils, genies, dangerous spirits, god, goddesses, animal protectors etc. There are many beliefs in realms such as heavens, hell, parallel world systems, underworlds etc. Some argue that attempts to enter those realities are futile, it is crucial that religious studies scholars explore them through a holistic approach. German philosopher goethe, asserted that a person that knows only one language, only knows one.
