Chapter 2: how religion began to be studied. In the west, this pursuit is centred around the use of logical reasoning as its method. Philosophy: the love or pursuit of wisdom. Philosophical discipline of philosophy in many western academic institutions tend to favor rational thought as the most acceptable technique for the acquisition of wisdom. In eastern philosophical traditions as well as in the west, wisdom is general regarded as deriving from the full compass of human abilities. The methods include: self discipline, cultivation of moral virtues, the use of the senses, and the development of intuitive understanding. Some of the latter methods ie. attaining profound intuitive understanding are believed to grant superior access to wisdom than is granted by rational thought alone.
