Relig st 1b06 - feb 9 - religion and art. All religions have artistic expression: like the hindu temples in the film we watched. Some traditions have restrictions on what can be expressed: in islam and judaism, the divine cannot be portrayed. For christianity, there is no restriction on artistic portrayal of the divine. There are many artistic interpretations from different cultures. Baby jesus is rarely seen on his own; typically seen with his mother mary. Religious scenes from the bible are also portrayed in ancient works: st. simeon holding baby jesus, jesus separating sheep from the goats (280-320, chris giving the new law to peter and paul (300-399 rome) Modern art: crucifixion window - 1510-1530 (stained glass - important architectural feature for many christian churches, crucifixion - simple carved structure from 1200-1300 france, much more modest, no gore, not elaborate. Michelangelo pieta 1498-1499 vatican - one of the most famous christian pieces of art.
