At the second council, it turned out there were disagreements among the monks as some were living in diferent coninents and were doing things diferently. There were no diferences in how monks should behave and the doctrine. This is the beginning of sectarianism, diferent schools of buddhism. This process of dividing into diferent schools, coninues for the next few centuries. Eventually we get tradiional lists of 18 diferent schools. institutionalization (corporatization of the monastery): the monks began not to live up to the ideal. If the buddha"s life represented an ideal of how monks should live then many monks were failing reformation (reaction against the state of things): these failures led to reformaion. When buddha died his ashes were spread at diferent locaions of burial grounds, called stupas.
