What about consciousness: perhaps, if simply being alive is not intrinsically valuable, being conscious is intrinsically valuable, glover: seems plausible to suggest that animals are conscious, if so, then human life cannot be intrinsically valuable because of consciousness. Human life vs animal life: consider a situation where you are faced with a choice of saving either a human or a cow, seems like most of us would place more value on the human"s life. And, it seems hard to defend the view that animals are not as conscious as humans. It is wrong to destroy a life that is worth living. The cessation of the employment of extraordinary means to prolong the life of the body when there is irrefutable evidence that biological death is imminent is the decision of the patient and/or his immediate family. The advice and judgment of the physician should be freely available to the patient and/or his immediate family.
