RELIGST 2TT3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 17: Kami, Arson, Martin Kierszenbaum
Document Summary
Tricky to define new religions, but we"re talking about formal established religions that are not. Most of these new religions come out of shinto or buddhist traditions though. When we switch over to what we call world view, not just talking about abstract concepts, but about how we feel about them. That single principle differs depending on the religion. You can also think of it as a ripple in the pond. You drop one thing, and see the effect of it on others. Self is the dominant force though, primary mover, in new religions. For a lot of them, problems in the world, come from problems in themselves. New religions offer focus and way to see problems (physical, social, etc) all those problems as connected, and as connected to yourself. This is cuz new religions wanna make the self central to everything. People join new religions cuz of money concerns, illness, suffering in their lives, lot of it is healing.
