Noticed the domination of egypt: 1920s - british occupied it and mental colonialization, reacting to the poverty, wide spread corruption (of egypt rulers) Against ulama because they do not think they were doing their job properly: thought to passive and too dependent on the government, egyptian ulama were influential because they were part of azhar. Cannot separate islam from social level: covers all aspects, all embracing. Islam is applicable at all times in all places. Cultural threat from the west was the greatest threat. In order to create islamic society needed an islamic revolution: not to overthrown king but change society. Change by returning to the principles of islam. Brotherhood wanted to islamise egypt: ex/ social habits had to be islamic. Part of the islamic programme: stressed family values, proper upbringing, how one dresses, speaks. Stressed moral and social reforms: not involved in politics. Offered education, established schools hospitals and social care. Mainly to prepare them for domestic duties.
